Freeman Signs was founded in the late 1940’s after World War II by Cullen D. and Lucille Freeman. The business was originally located at 2823 South Broadway in an old house. In 1948, the shop was built and the old house was removed.

In March 1954, Philip C. Grimm went to work for Freeman Signs. He learned sign painting, sheet metal, neon glass blowing, installation and service. Mr. Grimm worked for Freeman Signs until November 1957, when he opened another small sign company that he operated until March 1960. On March 1, 1960, Mr. Grimm returned to purchase Freeman Signs and the shop building. The operation continued on Broadway until 1970. In 1970, Mr. Grimm built a new building at 2991 South Tejon in the Englewood Industrial Park and moved Freeman Signs to this location and incorporated to American Freeman Industries dba Freeman Signs. The operation continued until 1974, when the company was sold for a brief period and then was reinstituted within a year. Mr. Grimm then built a new shop in 1975 at 1920 West Cornell Avenue and started operations with his son.

In June 2000, Mr. Grimm sold the business to Jeff Peters. Mr. Peters had previously worked for larger sign companies throughout the metro-Denver area for ten (10) years prior to purchasing Freeman Signs and incorporating as Freeman Signs, Inc. Mr. Grimm and Mr. Peters have worked closely in the ownership change and Mr. Grimm has been retained as a member of the Sales team.

The operations remain in Englewood. Freeman signs does business all across the state. The business has grown from the eight (8) employees Mr. Grimm retained to seventeen (17) employees as of June 2001. However, Freeman Signs maintains the family atmosphere originally created by the Freeman family through the Grimm family and now into the Peters family.
